THE VISION
THE PAYOFF
When we succeed in convincing decision makers to take full advantage of this opportunity, the long-term benefits for all will be profound. We will:
- Fix the existing problems with the transportation system so it can provide more capacity and more flexibility. This is a win-win: the system works better and we avoid the unnecessary costs of a megaproject downtown.
- Provide full public access to some of the country's finest views, eliminate highway noise and grime, and increase property values along the edge, attracting high-quality economic development, and bringing tax revenues to the city.
- Create vibrant public spaces: parks for recreation and festival space for waterside events to energize the quality of life downtown, ultimately leading to increased tourism, recreational boating and entertainment dollars.
- Build more housing for people on fixed incomes, integrated with kid-friendly recreation and entertainment opportunities to bring more families downtown, build community, and stave off civility problems.
- Allow more human connections to the water and offer diverse water-based recreation, inspiring stewardship for the Bay, and helping it flourish as an authentic, vital part of the city's identity.
- Bring density to the urban core, creating a vibrant, walkable neighborhood that costs us all less and is more sustainable than sprawl development for absorbing regional growth.
- Use green building strategies integrated into a functioning nearshore ecology, preventing sewage overflows into the Bay, reducing strain on water-treatment systems, and ultimately making Seattle a model of sustainable city-building.
- Create a healthier marine ecology in Elliott Bay with restored habitat and migration routes, aiding recovery of salmon populations and strengthening Seattle's commercial and recreational fishing economy.
